In order to better understand an activity we will be doing later this week, it is important that we understand the impact deadly diseases can have on our world.

Monday 10/6:  Essential Quesion--How do deadly diseases impact our world?

     Task:

          1.  Read the article "What Are Epidemics, Pandemics, and Outbreaks?"  (This article was retrieved from http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/what-are-epidemics-pandemics-outbreaks?print=true on Thursday, September 20, 2012)

               2.  As you read, make annotated notes in the margins.  These are strategies that help you stay focused and engaged in what you are reading.  Click on this link to see an example of how I annoted the article.  You can mark anything and add any comments that will help you better comprehend the material.

          3.  Once you have finished reading and "marking up" your document, get with a partner.  Share the points that you felt were important.  Explain why you underlined them or noted them in the margin.

          4.  Open this document.  What Are Epidemics.doc     Answer the questions in COMPLETE sentences in a different color font.  Make sure you save the document to your H:drive.

               **You will be printing your completed document to turn in for a grade when I get back from   

                  Camp Mason.

Tuesday 10/7 - Wednesday 10/8:  Essential Question--How do deadly diseases impact our world?

     Task:

          1.  Today you will be working on a mini-research project.  You will choose one of the following epidemics/pandemics to research.

                    Cholera          Spanish Flu          HIV/Aids          Smallpox

                           Bubonic Plague          Swine Flu              SARS

              2.  Use the internet to find out as much as you can about the disease.  Include information such as symptoms, when was it an epidemic, how many it effected, how to prevent the disease. 

               3.  Create a brochure on your laptop that can be used as a public service advertisement.  It must include:  pictures, a paragraph providing information for each of the above questions (highlighted in step 2), and a chart or graph.  You must also explain (in your own words) the impact the disease had on the community, country, or world. 

This project is DUE:  Friday, October 10th.

It must be printed (in black and white) and handed in at the beginning of class!!!

Remember:  Your grade will directly be related to the amount of effort you put into this project.
